This page provides access to texts useful to Penans or people who can read Penan. The first link downloads a modest English - Penan dictionary that I created at the urging of Penans who want to learn our language. Annexed to it is an explanation of English grammar, written in Penan. This little dictionary will also be of interest to foreigners wishing to learn Penan. The second link is to the Penan dictionary proper. The third link is to the Penan text "Urip ké' sahau tong tana' ", which is the first volume of the memoirs of Galang Ayu, complete with illustrations by him. Put online September 14 2015, it is a milestone in Penan literature. It is the first major book published in Penan about Penans. It is also being made available in paper copies and distributed gratis in the field. (A number of much shorter works, mostly myths and children's books, have also been published in paper format and handed out free to interested Penans. These latter works would never have been realized without the efforts of Libby O'Connor, the Borneo Project, and others.)
The last link is to a piece I wrote in Penan, which recounts a number of Greco-Roman myths. If you scroll down you will find an exact English translation of this essay. While intended to entertain my Penan friends, it has a serious purpose: it demonstrates that it is possible to be a good Christian and still remember, and cherish, one's pre-Christian traditions. The English translation makes it accessible to other Bornean natives who have been educated in English. It is a message that deserves to be heard anywhere missionaries have been a bit overzealous.
